YOUNG ITALIAN OPERA COMPANY ON A MISSION TO FIND TALENT
Italian opera talent Mattia Campetti and Michelle Buscemi are performing two concerts in Auckland in February as part of their first visit to New Zealand, but behind the music they are also here on a mission.
Based in the small walled town of Lucca, in the heart of Tuscany, Campetti established the Lucca Opera Festival which has been running since 2013 (www.luccaperafestival.com). The principal aim of the company is promoting and popularising operatic music while staging engaging and exciting performances. Lucca, as well as being a hub of music and culture in the Tuscan region, is also the birthplace of Giacomo Puccini, best known for composing Madame Butterfly and Tosca.
As well as performing live concerts, Mattia and Australian-born Michelle are here to promote their Young Opera program. A form of musical scholarship, the program aims to recruit young talent from Australia and New Zealand to join their total immersion course, which involves musical training with opera professionals in Lucca as well as learning Italian language and culture. Funds raised from the New Zealand events will help support students wishing to participate in the scheme.
Mattia and Michelle will perform two concerts in Auckland. The first, on Sunday February 8, will open the Wallace Arts Trust Summer Season with a performance at Rannoch House. The second concert will be held at The Pumphouse Theatre in Takapuna on the evening of February 9. More information on both concerts is available from www.earthwire.co.nz.
