Waitangi Day Dunedin 2015 - Dont Forget your Roots concert
MEDIA RELEASE (04 Feb 2015)
Waitangi Day 2015
The organisers of the annual Waitangi Day event held in the Octagon have invited local artists and community groups to join them for this year’s Don’t Forget Your Roots concert.
“As the nation commemorates 175 years since the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, we promote it as a day for all people to celebrate their own cultural heritage,” says Reitu Cassidy. “It’s the one day we get to see all the flags flying across the country and we’re encouraging people to bring the flags that represent them.”
Don’t forget your Roots reminds us to learn our nation’s history and our family stories. It’s about knowing where we come from and the significance of the Treaty.
“For us, it’s also about looking back at the 15 years we have flown our flags and raised our banners in the city centre and the many performers who have participated in our gigs,” says Ms Cassidy. The Dunedin City Council will once again fly the Tino Rangatiratanga flag which has been done via the Mayors office since 2008.
We are proud to have a posse of locals like Kaylee Row who have been regulars on the concert bill. This year’s line-up includes Belle, Half Kutz, Irie Simpson, Steve King, Jahred, Krizevac Tuitea, Kaylee and Wiremu.
The organisers would like to acknowledge the Dunedin City Council and the Ministry of Culture and Heritage for their support with this years event.
Our focus has always been on education and bringing tauiwi and tangata whenua together. Bring a picnic and your flags.
