Fever and Vixens remain undefeated after Day 2 at Summer Shootout
Reigning premiers the Melbourne Vixens and West Coast Fever remain the undefeated sides after an action-packed day two of ANZ Championship Pre-Season Summer Shootout at Sydney’s Netball Central.
After winning their two morning session games, the Vixens toppled the Mission Queensland Firebirds 26-23 in their only outing of the afternoon session to sit on four wins heading into the final day of the tournament.
Fever defeated the NSW Swifts 25-21 to open the session on the Show Court and then closed out the afternoon with a 38-18 victory over the SKYCITY Mystics to also sit on four victories at the end of two days of competition.
The Fever’s four-goal win was the Swifts’ first loss of the weekend in a match where both coaches gave their young players an extended run on court.
Earlier, the Firebirds were made to work hard for their 33-26 win over the Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel in the first match of the session. The Steel bounced back late in the day to topple the Adelaide Thunderbirds 29-23 to secure their first victory of the weekend.
The Tactix broke through for a much-deserved win after two close encounters earlier in the day with a 32-25 triumph over the Kia Magic on the Show Court.
The Swifts and Kia Magic have formed a reputation for thrilling encounters over recent years and the two sides again delivered, playing a close match to finish the afternoon action on the Show Court.
The Swifts led by a goal at half-time and the Magic kept pace with their opponents in the second half before the hosts were able to edge to a 27-25 victory.
After losing their opening game of the day, the Mojo Pulse bounced back with consecutive wins to finish the day. Their 26-24 victory over the Mystics in their only outing of the afternoon was fitting of a match between two sides looking to be part of the New Zealand Conference Finals later this year.
The final session on Sunday gets underway at 10am and the Summer Shootout finishes with a clash between the Swifts and Vixens - across the road at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre - at2pm.
