Redemption: Brian Minto Returns

Redemption: Brian Minto Returns

“The beast” Brian Minto is looking to redeem himself in front of of New Zealand fans, in the SUPER 8 Cruiserweight last man standing tournament in Christchurch at Horncastle Arena on March 28th.

Named as the international wild card for the knock out showcase, the man who stopped Shane Cameron for the WBO oriental crown will return to the weight he challenged Marco Huck for the WBO world title in 2010.

“I have major point to prove after the Joseph Parker loss, I broke my nose a week out and couldn’t get the fight rescheduled. I put the money first.”

Coping with his father’s terminal battle with dementia was also doubly weighing on his mind.

“My mental state was awful and I didn’t do myself any justice, looking back it was one of the dumbest moves of my career.”

The Pennsylvania native has often moved between the two divisions and is confident he’ll perform at the lighter weight.

“I was the Continental America’s WBC cruiserweight champion and I’ve been in with best cruiser in the world, I’m confident these guys aren’t at that level. This is my shot at redemption.”

Minto will be the man to beat in an 8-man cast which had the final four participants also announced today.

In addition to Minto, undefeated Samoan Olympian, Falani Tavu’I, Ghanaian Joseph Kwadjo and Shane Cameron sparring partner, Wellington’s Asher Derbyshire will join the previously confirmed names in Lance Bryant (NZ), Daniel Ammann (Aus.), Monty Filimaea (NZ) and Israel Adesanya (NZ) in the eight-man tournament.

SUPER 8 matchmaker, Mark Keddell, is confident he has the mix right.

“We’ve got the favorite, the dark horses and experienced veterans.

But if there’s one thing experience has taught us through the first two tournaments, is that it’s unpredictable.

Upsets are frequent and any fighter can upset the applecart over these three round sprints.”
