Fagan exits National Circuit
– but bring on the Golden Shears Open
Shearing legend David Fagan is out of the running to complete a double of the two major titles at the Golden Shears by being eliminated today from the PGG Wrightson National Circuit in Masterton.
Shearing this morning in the semi-finals, for which he was top qualifier after five competitions on different wool types throughout the country since October, Fagan missed out by one place in his bid for a crack at the six-man final to be shorn tonight, and what would have been a chance for a 10th National Cicuit win.
He is however still in the running for a 16th Golden Shears Open final, shearing in the glamour event’s semi-finals this afternoon, hoping to reach the six-man, 20-sheep Golden Shears Open final for a 27th and last time, also tonight.
The qualifiers for the PGG Wrightson National final over 15 sheep of five different wooll types, starting about 6.45pm today, are (in order) 2010 Golden Shears and World champion Cam Ferguson, of Waipawa, three-times National Circuit winner Tony Coster, of Rakaia, defending Circuit champion Nathan Stratford, of Invercargill, 2012 World champion Gavin Mutch,, of Whangamomona, Aaaron Haynes, of Feilding, and Wairarapa hope David Buick, recovering from the disappointment of missing-out on a place in the Open final.
TAB odds to win the PGG Wrightson National Circuit final: $3 Coster and Ferguson; $5 Stratford; $8 Buick, Haynes, Mutch
