Waterborne Fun Raising Funds for Kiwi Kids

Variety Splash kicks off in Whangarei

Every child will get a prize as the second Variety Splash kicks off on Friday, March 29, with a kids fishing competition at the big marquee at Marsden Cover from 4.30 in conjunction with Marsden Fishing Club’s Fishy Friday.

“Any child is welcome to take part,” says Variety Splash organizer Andrew Sworn, “and with plenty of fish in the harbour we’re expecting lots of splashy fun before the Variety Splash event opens later in the evening.”

Andrew is a long-time fund-raiser for Variety – The Children’s Charity, using his pink fire truck on the annual Variety Trillian Bash. Appropriately enough, the truck carries an ‘H2O Gurlz’ tag – thanks to his daughter Mel – as much a reference to their watery Whangarei Harbour home as to the fire truck’s water tanks.

The fishing contest his team has organized kicks off a nautical weekend on and around the Whangarei Harbour, with proceeds going to help sick and disadvantaged New Zealand children through Variety – The Children’s Charity.

“Thanks to the generosity of local boaties, you don’t even need a boat to take part,” Andrew says. “As long as you chip in for fuel, we’ll find you a berth for a weekend of waterborne adventures. We’ve taken a leaf out of the Variety Bash book and there are prizes for the best-themed boat and crew, there’ll be plenty of entertainment, and you’ll get to see parts of the harbour you may never have visited before.”

Bash and Splash events usually include light-hearted contests and activities, and this time around crews are encouraged to bring at least one snorkel, mask and flippers to dive for scallops.

“We’ve capped the entry at 15 boats, the entry donation to Variety is just $50, plus $80 for meals and entertainment over the weekend, and we’re half-way there, so anyone interested in farewelling summer in style should get in touch. There’s no better way to enjoy yourself on the water, while benefitting Kiwi kids in need of a hand-up” Andrew says.
