Vatican singer new judge for Caritas song writing competition

Caritas’ SINGout4JUSTICE annual school song writing competition for Years 7-13 students will be judged by a panel that includes Laura Collins, a Wellington singer/songwriter who performed at the Vatican earlier this year. Ms Collins performed at the Voices of Faith women’s storytelling event in Rome last month, singing a ballad written by fellow Kiwi musician Steve Cournane.

"I’m looking forward to hearing how these talented young New Zealanders apply their creative skill to this worthwhile task.” says Ms Collins.

Caritas wants to encourage young people to consider ways their song can express empathy for people in need, and the theme for SINGout4JUSTICE this year is Horizons of Hope.

The judges will be looking for songs that suggest ways to improve the lives of those living in situations of poverty, oppression, injustice or hopelessness. Legendary musician Don McGlashan and Father Chris Skinner SM have been judges for the competition in the past.

Songs can be entered by individuals or groups and can be sung in any language, provided there is an English translation of the lyrics. There are two categories: Years 7-10 and Years 11-13. A winner will be chosen from each year group and the winners will take home $500 worth of prizes. Entries close at 12 noon on Friday, 24 April, 2015.
