White Poppies for Peace Annual Appeal, 17 to 24 April

White Poppies for Peace

The White Poppies for Peace Annual Appeal, the main fundraiser for the White Poppy Peace Scholarships, starts today and runs through until Friday, 24 April.

The white poppy is an international symbol of remembrance for all the casualties of war - civilians and armed forces personnel - and of peace. Information about the white poppy is available athttp://www.whitepoppies.org.nz White poppies are available for a donation to the White Poppy Peace Scholarships.

The White Poppies for Peace Appeal is held annually from 17 to 24 April, and is the main fundraiser for the White Poppy Peace Scholarships. White Poppies for Peace collection boxes for the 2015 Appeal have been distributed to collectors around the country from Hokianga to Dunedin, and there are street collections in Wellington, the Kapiti Coast and Dunedin on Wednesday, 22 April - keep an eye out for the distinctive collection boxes with the White Poppies for Peace graphic if you are in one of those locations on Wednesday, and in various churches and other public places throughout the country during the appeal week. Each collector has a collection box and ID card with a unique identification code.

White poppies can also be ordered from White Poppies for Peace email whitepoppies@ymail.com

The White Poppy Peace Scholarships are awarded each year to assist with the costs of research into: the impacts of militarism, militarisation and warfare; alternatives to militarism, militarisation and warfare; or media coverage of militarism, militarisation, military deployment and / or armed conflict. The Peace Scholarships are for students studying at any tertiary education institution in Aotearoa New Zealand, and each is a minimum of $1,000.

The White Poppy Peace Scholarships were launched by Professor Cynthia Enloe in Wellington in October 2009, and the first two Scholarships were awarded in 2010. Six Peace Scholarships have been awarded so far; and applications are still open for research during 2015. Information about the Peace Scholarships is available at http://www.peacescholar.org.nz

You can support the Peace Scholarships by making a donation during the Annual Appeal or at any time during the year - your generosity will help to promote peace by directly supporting research into alternatives to militarism and war, and into peaceful means of resolving conflict instead of the use of armed force.

To make a donation by cheque, please use the form available at http://www.converge.org.nz/pma/poppiesform.pdf - if you would prefer to make a donation by direct credit or internet banking, please email whitepoppies@ymail.com for details - a tax credit receipt is sent for all donations. Thank you.
