$180,000 donation to Women’s Refuge

$180,000 donation to Women’s Refuge from NZ Sculpture OnShore exhibition

Women’s Refuge New Zealand has just received $180,000 from the Friends of Women’s Refuge – the proceeds of last year’s NZ Sculpture OnShore exhibition, held in Devonport, on Auckland’s North Shore.

The exhibition, which attracted some 19,000 visitors and featured work from over 100 artists, has been held every two years since 1986. It is organised specifically to raise funds for Women’s Refuge, and has to date donated over $1.5 million to the organisation.

Accepting the cheque on behalf of Women’s Refuge, the new CEO Dr Ang Jury, spoke of the organisation’s Gratitude for this critical on-going support, which provides Refuge with its largest source of private funding.

“Over 20,000 women and children need our services each year” she said. “On average, we answer a call to our Crisisline every seven minutes and we provide beds for over 200 women and children each night in our shelters.”

“For twenty years now, your regular donations have not only helped us to care for those women and children, but have supported projects aimed at developing sustainable long-term income for refuge,” said Dr Jury.

“I congratulate and thank everyone involved in NZ Sculpture OnShore. These talented, dedicated and compassionate people – mainly volunteers -- contribute so much to Women’s Refuge.”

A donation of $110,000 from the 2012 NZ Sculpture OnShore exhibition enabled Women’s Refuge to establish the Yellow Belle brand of upmarket recycled designer clothing stores. The first of these opened in Takapuna, Auckland, in February 2014.
