Mighty strike the ‘Jackpot’ with lucky find!
Mighty strike the ‘Jackpot’ with lucky find!
We’re on the hunt to find the owner of a travel diary from 1999. The diary was handed in with the keys of a Mighty Jackpot in Queenstown on 7 May.
Surprised by their find, the couple from New Caledonia handed it over to one of our star customer service representatives, who is keen to see the diary reunited with its owner.
The diary does not contain the name of the owner, however it tracks his travels around New Zealand from 31 January 1999 until 24 March, and then continues all the way through to December 31, 1999, the day before the new millennium!
Hitching a ride from place to place he visited Kaikoura, a number of glaciers, Copland and Routeburn Tracks, Picton, Taupo, the Coromandel and Auckland. He spent a lot of time talking to locals and obtaining his lifts from those who lived in the area.
The man who appears to be from Manchester, continued his travels to Bangkok, Chang Mai, the Burmese border, and Nepal. He celebrated his birthday watching the Mount Everest Marathon on 12 April.
Having a tough time returning to normal upon arriving back in the UK after spending 22.5 months away, his diary also tracked his fitness journey. Enjoying activities like Mountain biking, hiking and mountain climbing.
One of the highlights of his trip appears to be kayaking Doubtful Sound where he describes a beautiful day. “…The cloud lifted off the high peaks to reveal dramatic views with cascading waterfalls, bush (rimu/matai, etc…) right down to the waters edge. Wonderful views!”
The mystery of this diary goes deeper, as it is unknown how this diary even ended up in a mighty campervan as the campervan is far younger than the diary itself! The diary also starts in New Zealand and finishes in the UK, which leads us to believe the owner has re-visited New Zealand recently.
Kindred spirits with this man, who had an unforgettable holiday travelling this beautiful country of ours, we feel it’s our responsibility to solve the case of the mystery diary and reunite it with the owner.
