Queen's Birthday on Queens Wharf: Weekend Programme

It’s almost time for the royal celebrations of Queen’s Birthday weekend! Head down to Queens Wharf Saturday 30, Sunday 31st May and Monday 1st June for a three-day free event filled with music, culture, food, industry and history celebrating England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. The programme is jam packed with entertainment (outlined below). Don’t forget the The Great Queen’s Birthday Market will be running all day long in Shed 10, Auckland Sport are on site with loads of fun British games, and Mint Kitchen will be cooking up a storm at Union Jack’s and High Tea at the Majestic Tearooms.

Saturday 30th May
The weekend kicks off at 10am with the suitably ceremonial City of Auckland Morris Dancers. Irish and Scottish folk band Twisty Willow pick things up at 10.30am. Come 11.30, there’s a traditional marionette puppet performance, followed by the Meadowbank School Maypole Dancers at 12noon. With classic rock-pop hits from home and abroad, Black Rock Descendants hit the stage at 1pm. The puppet performance is back again at 2pm, followed by the daily film screening - Saturday’sbeing Tim Burton’s sweet-toothed Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005).

Sunday 31st May
Sunday kicks off again at 10am with the City of Auckland Morris Dancers, followed by Celtic band Twisty Willow at 10.30am. The Morris Dancers put on another show at11.30am, followed by the fun-filled traditional marionette puppet performance at 12noon. At 12.30, the DeSotos take to the stage with their blend of rock-infused country blues, followed by a performance of massed Pipe Bands at 1pm. The puppet performance is back again at 2pm, followed by the daily film screening - Saturday’s being the 1951 classic Alice in Wonderland. Outside the Cloud all afternoon, highland dancers and pipers maintain a Scottish theme to the weekend.

Monday 1st June
Monday kicks off in style at 10.30am with Celtic band Tamlin, followed by a traditional marionette puppet performance at 11.30am. At 12noon, the Clan Celtica Pipe Band leads the charge with a full-volume performance. The special Mad Hatter’s Tea Party kicks off at 1pm, free and open to all. The marionette is back to delight crowds once again at 2pm, followed by the last film of the weekend at 2.30pm, the 2014 remake of the family classic Paddington (teddy bears welcome).

Entry is free from 10:00am - 4:00pm each day, and Queens Wharf is easily accessible via train, bus or ferry from around Auckland.
