Parent Helpline Supports Families in Crisis
Parent
Help supports the comments reported in the article “New
Zealand’s shocking child abuse statistics” (www.stuff.co.nz on 2 June 2015) and
agrees that early intervention is critical in helping
vulnerable families and children.
Parent Help provides the only free parenting helpline in New Zealand that is available from 9am to 11pm – seven days a week. The service provides immediate support to parents, and offers ideas and strategies for dealing with children’s behaviour as well as managing parent’s stress to avoid the situation escalating.
Parent Help telephone support workers are trained to listen to parents and provide suggestions for parenting issues or refer to other appropriate services in their region.
“We hear from clients repeatedly that a calm voice at the end of the telephone is what they needed” said Dale Powles, Manager of Parent Help.“We aim to be the first point of call for families with parenting issues and are in the process of increasing awareness of our profile across the country. Our kaupapa is to support parents and to ensure that children are raised in a safe and positive environment.”
