Physics students at the University of Otago have just declared the start of a photo com- petition which runs until the 1st of July, to celebrate the International Year of Light. The contest is part of Luminescence: The Spectrum of Science, a student-run expo to high- light the importance of light and light-based technologies in our everyday lives, which will take place on Saturday the 18th of July in the Saint David Lecture Theatre Com- plex at the University. The competition is open to anyone from the Otago/Southland region, and entrants should submit a photo which showcases a beautiful or interesting property of light along with a short description of the shot and the underlying science.
The prizegiving ceremony will take place at the Luminescence expo, where the top en- tries will be on show and the public can vote on their favourite photos. Prizes for each each age category, people’s choice, and schools with the most entries will be given out, thanks to sponsorship from Quantum Science Otago, the University of Otago physics department, and SPIE - the International Society of Optics and Photonics.
