The Choir who Came in from the Cold

Gale Force Gospel, who can be found busking in Courtenay Place once a month, are coming in from the cold for their annual concert at St Peter’s Church Willis Street on Saturday 27 June at 5pm. The choir which sings acapella (unaccompanied by instruments) will delight their audience with an early evening programme of gospel music, from both the USA and Africa, entitled “Day Broke into my Soul.”

Founded five years ago, the choir grew out of a workshop held by New Zealand song leader Tony Backhouse and, Gale Forcecontinue to sing many gospel arrangements written by Tony. Numbering about 50, the choir is open to all singers without audition and regardless of experience, religion, race or creed.

In addition to meeting weekly, the choir’s busking is an opportunity to raise money for charity while sharing some great music with the Friday night crowd. An important part of the burgeoning community singing scene in the Capital, Gale Force Gospel are led by composer and choral leader Carol Shortis.
