WOW® Tickets Help Children in Nepal

Purple Cake Day supporters and World of WearableArt™ fans can enjoy the best of both worlds this year by being among the first to see WOW®2015, and helping kids at the same time.

Purple Cake Day is excited to offer people the opportunity to snap up 200 of the best seats in the house, to the WOW® Preview Show in Wellington on Wednesday 23 September at 7pm.

Part of the proceeds from each Premium Plus ticket will go to Purple Cake Day children’s charity.

Annually, funds raised by Purple Cake Day provide education opportunities for children living in poverty in Haiti, Nepal and Kenya. This year funds will also help provide UNICEF school-in-a-box kits to children in Vanuatu affected by Cyclone Pam.

One of their partner projects, First Steps Himalaya, has been responding rapidly to the devastating earthquakes in Nepal. Food, tarpaulins and blankets have been distributed to rural villages in Sindhupalchok, along with stationery and classroom supplies to 4200 students, allowing children to get back to some sense of normality. Now they are turning their focus to rebuilding classrooms.

Five days before the first April earthquake struck, First Steps Himalaya had completed an earthbag-constructed teacher training centre. This building is one of the only left standing in the area, and interest is coming from far and wide to repeat this earthquake resistant building method to ensure the safety of rural Nepali school children. They are up for the challenge and will benefit from these ticket sales.

says, “All funds received from Purple Cake Day this year will be used to refit classrooms damaged in the earthquake. Sindhupalchok, Nepal is the region worst affected and very few buildings are still standing after three massive earthquakes struck Nepal in April and May. Luckily, First Steps Himalaya’s new Earthbag Training Centre which had just been completed is almost intact with just a few cracks in the plaster. We are now leading a campaign to get schools rebuilt using this eco-friendly eathquake resilient building method. The trust is working on the ground in Nepal to try and get children into Temporary Learning Centres and get them back to a daily routine of going to school. This is all important in helping them cope with the trauma of the tragedy.”
