NZ athletes competing in Pacific Games for the first time
2015 Pacific Games - Australian and New Zealand athletes competing for the first time
The 2015 Pacific Games
are well and truly underway in Port Moresby, Papua New
Guinea, with Australian and New Zealand athletes competing
for the first time ever in weightlifting, sailing, taekwondo
and rugby sevens.
The Australian and New Zealand athletes are expected to add a new strength to the Games, however they will face stiff competition from the Pacific Islands teams who are ranked highly in the four disciplines.
The rugby sevens competition is a qualifier for the Rio Olympics so competition will be fierce as the teams fight for a spot at the first Olympics to include the sport. The New Zealand men’s rugby team will not participate as they have already qualified so it will be Australia fighting for qualification against the top ranked Pacific teams. The New Zealand's women’s team is also competing.
