Tourdates
Describing their music as “a
cold soundtrack for the disaffected… crafted from a love
of post-punk and 80s darkwave synth”, Sydney’s
Sounds Like Winter have just dropped their
stonking new video single, ‘Ishmael’s
Bones’, and are set to embark for two New Zealand
shows in Auckland and Wellington this September.
Formed in late 2013, the band has quickly risen to note as one of Australasia’s leading proponents of dark alternative music. The new video-single, ‘Ishmael’s Bones’, is a bone-rattling, sea-swaying stomp through Australian swamp-goth territory and colonial maritime history, described by the band as a “tribute to the brave souls who set out against all odds to explore this planet”.
The latest offering follows on from ‘Sanity Is Calling’; a brooding, guitar-driven post-punk track featured on the popular international goth compilation and conservation fundraiser, ‘For the Bats, Vol. II’ (March 2015). Coupled with widespread exposure and a video mash-up of classic black & white horror films, ‘Sanity Is Calling’ immediately broadened the band’s international following within the current wave of post-punk, deathrock and ‘old school’ goth revivalists.
Where ‘Ishmael’s Bones’ and ‘Sanity Is Calling’ highlight the band’s post-punk/proto-goth influences, previous video singles ‘The Dark’ and ‘Hollow’ showcase Sounds Like Winter’s aptitude for marrying slick, contemporary production values and electronic alt.rock elements to eighties darkwave synth melodicism (think: Cure, Depeche Mode, Joy Division/New Order et al).
Already being championed by specialist DJs around the world, and now fielding offers to tour Europe and North America, Sounds Like Winter embark for New Zealand in September, kicking off at Auckland’s Whammy Bar on Friday 11 September and finishing up in Wellington’sValhalla Tavern on Saturday 12 September.
Supports include Undiscovered Moons of Saturn, HUMANiSER and DJ Frankie Flesh in Auckland, and in Wellington, Splintered In Her Head, Todd Manion (Bat Nouveau, Aus) and DJs Batbones & Syria of Club Strange House (Melbourne/Brisbane).
