Michael Papps to Captain Wellington Firebirds

Michael Papps to Captain Wellington Firebirds

The Wellington Firebirds will be captained by Michael Papps in all three competitions during the 2015/16 season.

New Firebirds Coach Bruce Edgar is delighted at the appointment.

“This is great recognition for Michael to be named Captain across all three formats. He has clearly demonstrated strong leadership skills and with his experience is the logical successor to James Franklin who is unavailable. I look forward to working closely with Michael in shaping the Firebirds to become better players and be a competitive force in the upcoming season which starts on 15 October.”

Last season Papps brought up 10,000 first class runs in what has been a remarkable domestic career. He has scored 27 1st class hundreds and also 12 One day hundreds.

Papps said "It is a huge honour to be appointed Captain of the Wellington Firebirds for the 2015/16 season. James Franklin has set a high bar in terms of leadership for our group and I look forward to the challenge of continuing those standards while imparting my own style on the role. It's an interesting time for the Firebirds and I am excited to work alongside new Coach Bruce Edgar to help create a competitive unit that is challenging for honours across all 3 formats. Our recent success has provided a great platform and with a touch more consistency I'm confident we will see both individuals and the team move to another level."
