Waikato musicians get dark and sensual for Carmina Burana
While the name ‘Carmina Burana’ might not immediately make you think of a familiar piece of music, once you hear the opening movement ‘O Fortuna’ you will know exactly what you are in for. This movement has been used in many movies and television shows because of the dark and somewhat frightening emotion it brings to mind.
Even if you’re not a lover of classical music, you will still enjoy Carmina Burana; it’s ever changing moods, memorable melodies, and vast array of percussion is something that everyone will enjoy.
Carmina Burana is based on a series of 12th century poems that Carl Orff set to sensual, sometimes dark, and dramatic music. The poems speak of corruption, drunken dancing, and sensual love - while written in Latin and high German, the mood of each poem paints a vivid picture of scenes such as bustling medieval taverns, and secret gatherings of corrupt officials.
Trust Waikato Symphony Orchestra, Cantando Choir, and the Young Voices are extremely pleased to bring Carmina Burana to the Waikato for one show only, featuring internationally renowned soloists Amanda Atlas (Soprano) and Chalium Poppy (Baritone) under the musical direction of international conductor Rupert D’Cruze.
To get you into the mood, the orchestra will open the concert with Tchaikovsky’s well known ‘Nutcracker suite’, which features the Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy and Waltz of the Flowers.
Trust Waikato Symphony Orchestra, Cantando Choir, and Young Voices are all Waikato based music groups, made up of Waikato musicians who come together for the love of music. They love nothing more than sharing their love of music with the people of the Waikato region, and would love to see you at Carmina Burana.
Carmina Burana is being performed at the Founder’s Theatre Hamilton, at 4pm on Sunday 1 November. Tickets can be purchased from ticket.co.nz.
