Ashburton A&P Show

Ashburton A&P Show

Ashburton

October 30 & 31

LOCAL SCORES BIG DOUBLE ON HOME TURF

Rakaia’s Kimberly Bird was in flying form over the weekend, scoring a big double on home turf at the Ashburton A&P Show.

Bird made full use of her hometown advantage taking the Canterbury Equestrian/Lysaght Horse Coaches Young Rider on Friday, and backed that up with success in the Waterforce Horse Mini Prix in front of a massive home crowd on Saturday.

Nine started in the Canterbury Equestrian/Lysaght Horse Coaches Young Rider with only three combinations jumping clear including Bird on Ngahiwi Summer, former Young Rider of the Year Rose Alfeld (Leeston) on My Super Nova and Sally Spicer (West Melton) on Bella Vi, hunting for their first young rider victory.

Out first in the jump-off, Alfeld was fast but paid for it with one fence down to finish in a time of 34.11 seconds. Bird was next, jumping clear to take the lead in 36.93. Last out Spicer tried hard but had two fences down to give Bird the win.

On Saturday, Bird again held her composure to win the Waterforce Horse Mini Prix in a race against the clock. Just four started, with Bird and Kate Cavanagh on Vermont the only two clears. Bird was first to go in the jump-off taking unlucky rail at fence four to stop the clock in 35.36 sec-onds, finishing with 4 faults. Cavanagh played it safe and looked to have it in the bag right up to the second to last fence, but it too fell leaving her 4 faults also in a slower time of 42.79 seconds.

Younger sister Jaimee Bird was also on form taking out the Telford/Pearson’s Coachlines Junior Rider Series, while Broadfield’s teen Lucy Turner made it two from two, winning the Country TV/Paul Cunneen Property Brokers Pony Grand Prix with the only double clear, backing up from a win at Labour Weekend at Canterbury.

The Caledonian Holdings Amateur Rider was won by Sheena Ross on Quiz, with the Bayleys Real Estate 1.20m Table C against the clock was won by Brodie Roberts on SR Livingstone.

Jumping action will return to Ashburton next weekend for the Ashburton Area Grand Prix Show-jumping and Show Hunter Show which features the second southern leg of the FEI World Jumping Challenge and the annual South Island/Victoria Young Rider exchange.
