The Way of the Turtle at Water, Peace, Power

THE WAY OF THE TURTLE AT WATER, PEACE, POWER. 2016 NGA MOTU NEW PLYMOUTH JAN 28 TO FEB 7 2016

"We see Water, Peace, Power 2016 offering a rich opportunity to discuss ideas and focus on solutions for mindfully creating artworks in natural environments, particularly those with cultural significance."

These are the words of collaborators Lee Joachim, Tracey Benson and Martin Drury. Lee Joachim is Manager Research and Development of the Yorta Yorta Nation Aboriginal Corporation in Australia. He is travelling to New Plymouth as a guest of Intercreate, a Taranaki based creative trust. Tracey Benson is an artist and researcher based in Canberra, Australia. She often collaborates with Indigenous communities, historians, artists, technologists and thinkers. Martin Drury is a photographer and cartographer who for six years was cartographer for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.

The three plan to develop a video installation for display in the bush, generated by alternative energy sources. As part of the Water, Peace, Power 2016 event there will be workshops in using five volt, twelve volt and solar power. With current technology it is possible to attach an inverter to a twelve volt battery and run a laptop, data projector and sound system without needing gridded electricity.

Due to using electronics outside, the Water, Peace, Power 2016 event commences with a multi-cultural hui up Mt Taranaki, to consider what approaches and protocols are appropriate to placing art works in the environment. This will be followed by a week of workshops and creativity, with projects presented on the final weekend.
