Artist runs a pop-up kitchen for bread-making
What can an artist do when money is tight? Let the artwork make a crust! That’s what North Shore puppet artist Dietlind Wagner decided when she hit hard times. By combining her distinctively sculpted and collaged Dede puppets with her passion for homemade food the The Artist’s Survival Cookbook was born. The cookbook is brimming with recipes made from flour, water and a few other basic ingredients most people find in their pantry. It has recently been published after a year in the making and the artist and her puppets are celebrating this achievement by providing a free pop-up kitchen. Everyone is welcome to join in and experience how easy it is to make delicious bread from basic ingredients. Well-known garden and nutrition guru Dee Pignéguy will join the artist and puppets on the day and provide herbs and garden-fresh vegetables to complete a simple meal.

Making food and sharing it is the
glue that binds communities together and Dietlind, an
educator by profession, loves to share her knowledge. “I
don’t want to compromise on a good diet. Making bread and
buns yourself certainly makes the dollar go further and you
also know what’s in your food” says Dietlind. While she
had young adults in mind when she was writing her cookbook,
the recipes can easily be followed by children or, even
better, prepared together.
Throughout the book, the Dede puppets expertly point out pitfalls to avoid as well as giving the occasional opinionated take on diet and life in general. It is a basic cookbook to reconnect people with simple food, created for anyone who wants to avoid preservatives and artificial flavours in their staple food. It’s an ideal companion for those on a tight budget. With a bit of organisation the recipes aren’t even time consuming and they certainly aren’t expensive. Experience it on the 28th of November!
