Matakaea, Shag Point

Matakaea, Shag Point

18th November 2015

Christchurch based multimedia artist Robyn Webster uncovers the history of a significant Otago site in her recent exhibition soon to open at the Ashburton Art Gallery. Webster’s exhibition, Matakaea, Shag Point will transforms the Carr Family Gallery with sculpture, visual imagery and poetic text. Matakaea, Shag Point is a product of extensive research on Webster’s part working in collaboration with acclaimed writer and poet Bernadette Hall. Webster and Hall take a journey of discovery beyond the mere location of the Shag Point significant site. Observations, conversations and memory collide in a remarkable pairing of artist and poet. Webster work is formed from plant based materials which are woven using traditional/manual methods. Hall has contributed a number of word-strings which wrap around the exhibition space hovering in the periphery of our experience.

Webster background included being head of art at Riccarton High School. She has participated in group and solo shows in New Zealand with work held in a number of private and public collections, such as the University of Canterbury, College of Education, Riccarton High School, Otago Polytechnic School of Art, and MacAndrew Intermediate School.

Matakaea, Shag Point opens to the public on Saturday 21 November at 2pm. As part of the opening formalities the artist will speak about how this exhibition came to fruition through an insightful artist talk.

Matakaea, Shag Point runs from 21 November 2015 to 10 January 2016.
