Raggamuffin Talent Search Finals Feature Hot NZ Talent

Twenty young New Zealand reggae and urban bands are battling it out for two spots to perform at Raggamuffin IX in Auckland in February.

The Finals of the Raggamuffin Talent Search take place on Friday 11 December at The Ledge, Porirua and Raggamuffin Festival spokesman Brotha D (Danny Leaoasavaii) says the competition is hot.

“We’ve seen some fantastic talent come through the five heats and we are looking forward to an incredible night of great New Zealand reggae and urban music talent as we give these bands the chance to shine.

“We know they are all excited about the opportunity to win a spot to perform at the southern hemisphere’s largest reggae and urban festival.”

Judges for the contest on the night are Wellington reggae band Tomorrow People and well-known urban music star Scribe along with Brotha D.

“We’re looking for a slick sound, communication with the audience, and a band or musicians who are there to give people a good time,” Brotha D said.

The winning acts – one reggae and one urban – will open the Raggamuffin IX festival which features legendary reggae band UB40, along with The Game, Xzibit, Sly & Robbie with Bitty McLean, Macy Gray, Inner Circle, Maxi Priest, Diana King, House of Pain featuring Everlast, Junior Marvin’s Wailers and Savage. Each of the winning acts also receives $2500 as a cash prize.

The Raggamuffin Talent Search Finals are at The Ledge, Porirua on Friday 11 December from 8pm with $10 entry on the door.

Raggamuffin IX takes place at The Trusts Arena, Auckland on Saturday 20 February. Tickets are on sale through Ticketmaster www.ticketmaster.co.nz or 0800 111 999 or through Red Rat clothing stores.
