Auckland Premiere of Hit Kiwi Comedy at Howick Little Theatre
Howick Little Theatre is thrilled to present the Auckland premiere of Justin Eade's CENTRAL OTAGO MAN that sold out in the South Island.
Directed by Alex Gleed, CENTRAL OTAGO MAN is an hilarious heartfelt comedy about Tryfen Gribilco, a Central Otago farmer who is running a bungy-jumping platform with his young offsider, Marty Wellings. Tryfen (David Jaunay) is a happily politically incorrect bloke who, finding he has a captive audience in the high-profile clients he has on his bridge sounds off on anything and everything without being the least bit concerned who he might be offending. Marty (James Adlam), being a by-the -book adventure tourism employee, is torn between his genuine affection for his over-opinionated boss and his need to keep the clients safe and happy. He is concerned that due to Tryfen's tendency to talk bluntly and continuously with the clients, they are not getting through as many jumps as they should and their senior boss K.J might not be pleased.
Their clients include a sophisticated Australian senator (Hamish Stevens) and his daughter (Mazarine Ford), and an uptight German UN delegate (Sabine Melese) and her French assistant (Rabindra Roy). By the time Tryfen has schooled them all on life in general and the finer points of global geo-politics, Marty is becoming increasingly concerned about his job security. But confirmed bachelor Tryfen is about to get a lesson of his own when backpacker Heidi (Dominique Pritchard) turns up with a worldview he can't argue with because he is smitten.
This funny and genial play is uniquely set on a bungy-jumping platform with the majority of actors being new to the Howick Little Theatre stage.
The director Alex Gleed joined the Howick Children’s and Youth Theatre in 2001 and has been involved in almost 40 productions as an actor, director or otherwise. Alex has directed a number of productions for the HCYT, but this will be both his first stint at directing adults and his directorial debut at Howick Little Theatre. His play 'The Leaf Jar' was performed as part of the HLT Studio season in 2015. Alex will also be directing CRAVE this year for the HLT Studio which will be presented in May.
