The negative publicity about ticket sales, exaggerated stories about misbehaviour and other cities trying to get the tournament to their cities has had a disproportionate effect on last year’s and this year’s Wellington Sevens crowds. Yes changes had to be made and they have been. Let’s stop blaming the problems that exist in Courtenay Place every Friday night, on the Wellington Sevens.

On a weekend when just a few short weeks before Elton John had been here, the cricket was on Sunday the day of the Sevens finals and Wellington Racing was doing its thing, I reckon we had one of the best Wellington Sevens tournaments and finals that we have ever had in the city. Well organised, well-run, fun, safe, lots of families, fantastic Wellington weather, and a stunning, breathtaking final all combined for an absolutely fabulous weekend.

I take my hat off to Steve Dunbar and his team. I have been a volunteer at the Sevens for the last three years and supported the tournament as a fan and spectator, a Director on Positively Wellington Tourism and as a City Councillor for 15 years. I am, and remain, very proud to be part of such an event.
Keep it in Wellington, Stop the negative publicity and get behind the event. Sevens doesn't belong anywhere else.
