Cheap Fakes Bring Aussie Festival Funk to NZ
Cheap Fakes Bring Aussie Festival Funk to NZ
They’re Australian festival favourites for a reason, and now Cheap Fakes will bring their horn-heavy soul to New Zealand for the first time.
Rocking crowds for more than seven years, Cheap Fakes will make their way to the Land of the Long White Cloud for the first time in February and March. The tour comes as no surprise with the six-piece band comprising ex-pat Kiwis as well as some of Queensland’s most highly regarded musicians.
The 2016 New Zealand tour comes off the back of a big 2015 which saw Cheap Fakes score slots at Woodford Folk Festival, Surfers Paradise Festival, Golden Days Festival, Big Pineapple Festival, Mitchell Creek Blues ‘n’ Roots Festival, the Originals Festival, Caloundra Music Festival, Valley Fiesta and Island Vibe as well as their usual gig-heavy roster.
2015 also saw the release of their third album Modern Vintage, featuring the singles Just in case & the ever catchy Baby, It’s a Good Song, which comes with a warning: it’s an earworm and then some.
Front man and main songwriter Hayden Andrews, originally from the small town of Carterton in The Wairarapa, said the album was designed to be a journey for the listener.
“There are a lot of different styles and genres and we have worked really hard to craft an album that is intense and huge in parts but then also gentle and sparse in others. It is definitely an album of big build ups and breakdowns, tension and release,” Hayden said.
Recorded with legendary producer John Merchant (Michael Jackson, Bee Gees, Lenny Kravitz) and with a year’s worth of perfecting their sounds in post-production, it’s no wonder Modern Vintage has piqued the ears of industry pundits in Australia.
Known for their huge horns, syncopated beats and catchy melodies, Cheap Fakes are ready to unleash Modern Vintage on Kiwi ears with eight shows across both islands, included in the tour.
Cheap Fakes have been working hard since 2009 to bring festival vibes to audiences all over Australia, and now it’s New Zealand’s turn.
