Art in Structure Finalists to be displayed in New Zealand’s First Virtual Sculpture Park

The human face, gothic cathedrals, DNA, flowers and the Waterview Tunnel are some of the inspirations for the 12 artworks selected as finalists in the Art in Sculpture competition.

Competition judge James Wright, one of New Zealand’s most accomplished sculptors, selected six designs from established designers and six works by emerging artists in the inaugural Art in Sculpture competition which challenged designers to use metal construction materials in a new way.

He was impressed with the high standard of all the entries saying selecting the 12 finalists took careful consideration.

“I was really impressed with the work by the finalists as they have risen to the challenge of using metal pipes, wire and plates, which is normally hidden and transforming into art to be enjoyed out in the open.”

Members of the public will be able to view the 12 finalists at New Zealand’s first pop-up virtual sculpture park at Karanga Plaza in Wynyard Quarter (located near the ANZ Events Centre).

The sculpture park will be open from 10am to 5pm on Sunday 3 April and people will be able to view the winning designs by using iPads supplied for the event. They can then vote for their favourite in both the Emerging Designer and Professional Designer categories.

Easysteel Marketing Manager Neil Watson says the category winners will then move from the virtual world to reality.

“We are going to fabricate the two winning designs and then auction the finished artworks to raise money for Ronald McDonald House Charities. Our competition is all about form and function so we are pleased it will result in the creation of artwork that is both beautiful but also gives back to the community.”

The two winners will be announced at an awards evening at the Gus Fisher Gallery on Wednesday 6 April. Their winning sculptures will be fabricated and the finished artwork will be auctioned later this year.
