8 Lucky Gold Monkeys on auction in Parnell

8 Lucky Gold Monkeys on auction in Parnell

Well known New Zealand artists and celebrities added their creative genius to Year of the Monkey art-pieces to be auctioned for charity, including 8 lucky gold monkeys.

A unique Year of the Monkey Exhibition showcasing 30 life-sized monkey sculptures in Parnell was held 6-21 February. The exhibition received lots of media attention and resulted in several new patrons visiting Parnell with monkey maps in hand.

Monkeys in the Chinese Zodiac are characteristically described as smart, quick witted and adaptable and several artists have tapped into the auspicious luck associated with gold.

Carolina Izzo has over thirty years experience in art conservation and heritage restoration, which began with her training in Florence. She has managed large art conservation teams in Italy and New Zealand and is a staunch advocate of heritage conservation. Her two monkeys ‘Gina’ and ‘David’ are exquiste creations, covered in gold leaf. ‘David’ was named after David Bowie and his variegated gold leaf suit certainly refects that flare.

Isaac Katzoff is a contemporary glass artist, and together with Stephen Bradbourne created ‘Golden’, a masterful creation of gold paint and gold leaf with the expertise of the glass artists showing in the hand made martini glass and molten glass pillow on which ‘Golden’ sits.

Nicky Foreman sourced her inspiration from the gold detailing in the Palace of Versailles and ‘Singe de Versailles’ is layered with gold leaf and trailing green foilage. Other artists chose to paint their monkeys in gold such as ‘Merc’ and ‘Roly’ (with reference to luxury brands) by Anah Dunsheath as well as ‘Koro’ by Erin Simpson and ‘DiDi’ by Mark Wallbank. And then there’s ‘Jason the Golden Faced Rainbow Monkey’ and the gold feet of ‘Mimulus’ rising into the flames.

The personalities of these creations are as different as the artists themselves, with something to suit every taste.

The formal auction will take place on Saturday 12 March at 6.30pm at Webb’s, Falcon Street, Parnell. Monkeys will be on display during the day from 11.00am. You are welcome to attend a final viewing and to meet some of the artists at 5.30pm prior to the auction.

Parnell Inc. is delighted to give its support in 2016 to The Starship Foundation, with profits from the auction going towards the Starship National Air Ambulance Service.
