The Youth Performance Trust (YPT) announces the upcoming event Matariki Rhythmz. Coinciding with the month of Matariki Rising and part of the Auckland Matariki Festival, Matariki Rhythmz offers high school students in the Auckland area a unique opportunity to learn, create and express their urban cultural identity through music and dance.
Matariki Rhythmz is a music and dance event whereby participants are able to create original compositions and choreography and present these on a stage of their peers to a panel of expert judges.
The event dates and venues are:
(HEATS) Saturday June 25th - Dorothy Winstone Centre
(SEMIS) Friday July 8th - Vodafone Events Centre
(FINALS) Saturday July 9th - Vodafone Events Centre
The event will offer participants the opportunity to compete for some major cash prizes, bragging rights as the best in Auckland and to meet and be mentored by some of the stars of the entertainment industry.
YPT will also be running weekend workshops leading up to the event whereby participants will have the opportunity not only to cover some of the basics but also to hang out with some well-known faces.
Matariki Rhythmz is a culturally inclusive event with a base in Polynesian and urban culture. Apart from being fun, it raises the profile and significance of Aotearoa and the Pacific’s amazing cultures, languages as well as its music and dance expressions.
Matariki Rhythmz is for high school students under the age of 19 (as of May 2016) and is a great opportunity to engage in a positive event based on their strengths, identities and backgrounds.
