Improvisation Breaks Out
Comparing all theatre to Shakespeare is a little like comparing all improvisation to Whose Line is it Anyway?. Improvisation is simply something created spontaneously, and that’s exactly what you get at Off the Cuff, Nelson’s monthly improv shows. There is improvised comedy, without a doubt, but also drama, music, singing, poetry and dance.
This months’ Show, Give me a Break could and will go anywhere … ... heartbreak, Breaking Bad, break up, breakdown, break through, lucky break, faulty brakes, break a leg, Achy Breaky Heart, Heartbreaker, breakdance, breaking news, commercial break, breakfast, spring break, have a break, have a Kit Kat, coffee break, Muffin Break, break the internet, Prison Break, Point Break ... the sky is the limit. Where it goes depends upon the suggestions provided by the audience and the imaginations of the improvisers.
Artistic Director Laura Irish says that “we’re trying to give Nelson audiences something a little different; something that showcases the true range, variety and skill of improvisation”. This month’s improvisers are Doug Brooks, Glenn Cousins, Jennifer Arai and Judene Edgar with musical improvisation from Isaac Thomas and MCed by Jim Risner. The intrepid improvisers will go where no one has dared to go before, and will probably never go again ... cos it's all Off the Cuff.
Muffin Break has come on board with the break theme of this months’ show with free coffee vouchers for the first 40 pre-booked tickets so that the audience can enjoy another break. Tickets are available at the door or pre-book at the Theatre Royal, 78 Rutherford St, Nelson or go to www.theatreroyalnelson.co.nz.
