Ben Bro attempts a shock and awe entry into his music video directional debut

8th April 2016

Ben Bro attempts a shock and awe entry into his music video directional debut for video ‘Life is the Show’.

Bro (a.k.a. Benny’s Videos) has regularly collaborated with musicians Glass Vaults over the last few years and seized the opportunity to create a call to action in promoting discussion on New Zealand’s suicide crisis.

“Suicide doesn't only affect the young, but young males seem to be the most at risk. It's a complex issue and I don't think one music video can say anything definitive about it. No more than a segment on the news of Isis beheadings can bring an end to terrorism.” Ben Bro

Bro was raised and still lives in Lower Hutt. The youngest of 14 within a catholic family, he found it hard vying for attention. However at school that wasn’t a problem, although it came with negative connotations “homophobia was rampant at school. 'Gay' was thrown around a thousand times a day. Why would anyone want to choose to be gay? For the stigma, the constant ridicule, the social alienation, the chance to loose all your friends and family, the daily threats of violence?”

Bro remembers his fall from grace “For a time I was king of the courtyard, seemingly invincible, but nothing lasts for long. In the final term of the year, I came to school to find none of my friends talking to me. It was clear some type of coup had taken place. I'd be knocked from the top tier and I fell hard.” Bro ended up dropping out of school“I'd had enough of the bullying, the endless 'gay taunts' and daily threats of physical violence.”

Ben Bro’s inspiration for the ‘Life is the Show’ video came from a dark and beautiful dream. “I was surrounded by the most beautiful boys. The next thing I know I'm on my knees with blood on my hands and I can't stop crying. I kept thinking, I don't wanna go to prison, I don't wanna go to hell”

‘Life is the Show’ is the final single on Glass Vaults LP Sojourn, the video was made with funding by NZ on Air.
