Lawyer outsmarts opponents to take the King in the Ring crown

Auckland based lawyer Victor ‘Slick’ Mechkov has been crowned New Zealand’s first 75kg King in the Ring.

The 27-year-old won the belt and the $10,000 cheque after an explosive split decision battle with Hayden ‘Tat North’ Todd at the biggest kickboxing event in this country at the ASB Stadium in Auckland on Saturday night.

Mechkov, who trains at Elite Thai Kickboxing gym in Penrose, says his opponent fought well.

“It was a hard road to the final, but I got there in the end.”

Mechkov told the crowd he will use his winnings to buy the ring his girlfriend has had her eye on.

A defeated Todd thanked his opponents for pushing him to the limit.

“I went in with the goal of winning the first fight and working hard in the rest, and that’s exactly what I did,” he said.

The ASB stadium atmosphere was electric as the eight men were whittled down to one winner.

Event promoter and six times world champion Jason Suttie said the event was all about the fans.

“King in the Ring did not fail to disappoint,”

“True fight fans got to see their favourite athletes, and we’ll do it all again in Wellington later this year,” he said.

Viewers tuned in to King in the Ring from around the world on Sky Sport and on an international King in the Ring channel.
