NZRU launch of initiative to encourage greater diversity and inclusion across New Zealand sport
31 May 2016
For immediate release
The NZ Falcons are pleased that the NZRU have acknowledged the need to address homophobia in sports by launching their diversity strategy today.
The 2015 Out on the Fields study highlighted the discrimination that the LGBTQIA+ community face and as Aotearoa's only gay and inclusive rugby club we are keen to support any efforts to ensure that strategy results in meaningful, tangible outcomes for players.
When we create a sporting culture where everyone can succeed it's good for the whole country. We should never restrict our talent pool by something as archaic as homophobia. It's not just the ethical thing to do, it's the practical thing to do for the benefit of the game.
We expect to see New Zealand become a place where there is zero tolerance for any kind of discrimination both on and off the field.
This is the long-awaited first step and we are eager to see what comes next.
