Head turning creations at Edible Fashion Awards

Head turning creations at Edible Fashion Awards

Heads will turn at the 2016 Hastings PAK’nSAVE Edible Fashion Awards when a selection of stunning headpieces grace the runway.

Created by the team at M>PHOSIS Hair Stylists, the four headpieces will be modeled by members of Circus Theatre Troupe, The Dust Palace at Saturday night’s Evening Extravaganza.

Tash Bird, owner of M>PHOSIS Hair Stylists says the salon has had a long association with the Edible Fashion Awards and creating the headpieces is a great way to support the event. “We love getting behind the Edible Fashion Awards – it’s all about promoting fashion and giving creative people a platform to take their talents further,” says Tash.

Creating the headpieces is a labour of love for the talented team and involves months of work with many hours spent constructing the elaborate creations. Planning for the 2016 event began in January, with the team coming together to brainstorm ideas as soon as the ‘fantastical’ theme was announced.

For the past two years, the team has decided to take the challenge to a whole new level and create the headpieces entirely out of edible materials or food related items. Working with materials as diverse as weetbix, nutrigrain, chocolate and seaweed creates its own set of issues and requires some inventive solutions to ensure the headpieces last the distance. Food related materials have also made their way into this year’s creations, including forks, chopsticks, plastic bottles and shopping bags. In keeping with the Edible theme, food colouring is being used in place of paints to colour the headpieces.

Tash describes the creation of the headpieces as a labour of love. “It’s a lot of fun and it’s a great team-building activity for our staff.” A healthy level of competition between staff members keeps everyone on their toes with different members of staff interpreting the theme in very different ways. “With a broad theme like ‘fantastical’, we are only limited by our imaginations,” says Tash.

The finished designs are a closely guarded secret with the four pieces being revealed at the Evening Extravaganza at Showgrounds Hawke’s Bay on Saturday night.

“We’re all really excited about Saturday night’s show and can’t wait to see our creations being modeled on stage.”
