The Christchurch Symphony Orchestra make Radio Award Finales
The Christchurch Symphony Orchestra in finals in prestigious New York awards
The Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and Radio New Zealand have reached the finals for a prestigious New York award.
RNZ Concert’s live broadcast of the CSO’s first 2015 Lamb & Hayward Masterworks concert, Sea to Sky, is in the finals of the New York Festivals Radio Awards under the Best Music Special category. Other finalists in the category include the broadcast of The Battle of Britain at 75 concert featuring the BBC Concert Orchestra on BBC Radio 2, and the live broadcast of the VE Day at 70: A Party to Remember concert at Horse Guards Parade in London.
The New York Festivals Radio Awards is the world’s largest radio competition. It honours radio programming from networks and stations from around the world, and is judged by a global panel of radio experts.
Sea to Sky was a concert of firsts – the first appearance by Benjamin Northey in his Chief Conductor role, and the first time that Australian guitarist Slava Grigoryan performed with the CSO. It was also the first time in more than 30 years that RNZ Concert had broadcast a CSO concert live to air.
“We are delighted that this very special concert has been nominated for such a prestigious award” explained Gretchen La Roche, CEO of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra “It was a tremendous evening made even more special with the first live to air broadcast of our orchestra from RNZ Concert for many years”.
The concert featured works by Sibelius, Nigel Westlake, and Kiwi composer Douglas Lilburn.
This live broadcast was engineered by Darryl Stack, and produced by David Houston.
Winners in each category will be announced at a gala event in New York on 20th June, 2016.
Past winners of the Best Music Special category include the broadcast of A New York Philharmonic Tribute to Lorin Maazel.
