Sky Tower lights for final week of Matariki Festival
This week, the Sky Tower will again light as a sunrise to herald the final week of Auckland’s Matariki Festival, celebrating Maori New Year.
From tonight until Sunday night the Sky Tower will be lit in shades of orange like a sunrise. At this time of year the Matariki constellation rises in the north east, near where the sun also rises which has been the inspiration for this year’s lighting.
As part of the final celebrations, SKYCITY has partnered with Auckland Council to host Te Korakora on Federal, an event that will transform Federal Street into a carnival of food, fashion and music on Friday 15 July.
The Sky Tower is the southern hemisphere’s tallest man-made structure based in the heart of Auckland, and is one of New Zealand’s most recognisable landmarks.
SKYCITY lights the Sky Tower for charities or community initiatives that we support financially, to mark national holidays, milestones or other celebrations or events, or as a symbol of respect or solidarity.
The lighting of the Sky Tower is best viewed, photographed or filmed 30 minutes after sunset.
