Kiwi shearer rocketing towards World record in the UK
Hawke’s Bay shearer Matt Smith was tonight at least a sheep-up per hour in his bid for the first World shearing record ever to be shorn in the Northern Hemisphere.
In the World nine-hour strongwool ewes record bid in Cornwall, England, he had shorn 306 in the 3hrs 45mins up to morning tea (8.45pm NZT).
He had averaged 81.6 sheep an hour,
which compared which the 80.2 per hour needed to break the
record of 721 set by Porangahau gun Rodney Sutton in a King
Country woolshed in January 2007.
Starting at 5am local
time – 4pm in New Zealand - Smith shore a record opening
two-hour run of 164 to breakfast, and maintained the pace
with 142 in the run to morning smoko, the first of four 1
hour 45 minute runs which, with breaks, would see out the
rest of the day to the end at 4amNZ
