Hawke’s Bay Racing shuts down
Staff at Hawke’s Bay Racing shut down their computers and abandoned their desks this week to raise awareness of the work of Cancer Society volunteers.
CEO Andrew Castles and his team joined the Hawke’s Bay Cancer Society as they prepare for their upcoming flagship fundraiser – Daffodil Day.
Over the month of August almost 10,000 Cancer Society volunteers across the country spend thousands of hours packing boxes of fabric daffodils and delivering donation boxes to New Zealand outlets.
“Working with the Hawke’s Bay Cancer Society has given us an insight into the incredible amount of work these volunteers undertake in preparation for Daffodil Day,” says Castles.
“This is in addition to the hundreds of hours they provide in support and care services all year round for Cancer patients, their families and carers.”
This year Hawke’s Bay Racing and Westbury Stud are once again joining forces for the Makfi Challenge Stakes - Daffodil Raceday on Saturday 27th August.
They will host another ‘High Tea’ at the races in conjunction with the New Zealand Racing Board – an initiative that has now been rolled out in Christchurch, Hamilton and Auckland.
“These people give their time throughout the year and are heroes of our community. We consider it a privilege to be able to do something small to recognise the wonderful work done by this amazing group.”
Makfi Challenge Stakes Daffodil Raceday is the family day of the Spring Racing Carnival and there will be plenty of fun and free children’s entertainment and live music for Mum and Dad.
“We were thrilled to have Brendon McCullum on course with us last year, and we are excited to say we will be bringing two very special guests fresh from competing in Rio to join us in the Bay this year,” says Castles.
Entry to the course is by donation to the Cancer Society, check www.theraces.co.nz/page/daffodil-raceday for updates and announcements.
It kicks off a spectacular month of Hawke’s Bay racing, with the Windsor Park Plate on September 17 and the Livamol Classic on October 1.
