We live our lives behind a mask or a front that we put up, my intention is to be transparent and open.

This show opens up the inside of the sculpture.’

Terry is looking at sculpture through new eyes. By working in clear Perspex he allows the viewer to see into the inner workings of the sculpture, looking more in depth than is possible with traditional sculpture.

He ponders the question that because ‘sculpture’ is traditionally viewed as a three dimensional, free standing object, what does it become if he takes a sculpture places it as an image onto a wall? Is this still a sculpture? If not what does it become?

This exhibition features a series of work which developed from reclaiming discarded Perspex and through experimentation with a computerised router, eventually developing a way of working it to produce a body of work which asks the viewer to consider the multiplicity of forms and planes which a transparent sculpture can produce in a space.

The exhibition creates an enveloping space in which form and transparency; light and shadow; interplay and co-exist.

About Terry Haines

Terry says that he likes to look at life and nature, combining them both into forms which have feeling and emotion. He feels that people are drawn to sculptures, wanting to run hands over the smooth lines. He works in stone, wood, copper, glass and more recently Perspex.

His art involves his spirit, love, life experience, and skills developed over the years. He knows that now he is in a stage of life and artistic development where he has a freedom and a new direction in his life.

His early art training was at Hungry Creek Art and Craft School, since when he has exhibited at many Galleries including the Kaipara Coast Sculpture Gardens, Auckland Botanic Gardens, Waitakaruru Sculpture Park, Estuary Art Centre, Kings College, Kumeu Arts Centre, Ellerslie Flower Show, Creative Gardens Expo(Napier), Rock the Stone (Albany), The Art Boutique (Tauranga), Wine Country Gallery (Hastings) and many others.

In 2005 he was an award winner at the Ellerslie Flower Show.
