First choral performance in new venue, The Piano
First choral performance in new venue, The Piano, by Christchurch’s AtlasVoices Ensemble
Christchurch vocal ensemble AtlasVoices will perform Brahms’ German Requiem at The Piano, the city’s newest performance venue, 7.30pm onSaturday 20 August.
The audience will be one of the first to attend an event at the brand new Centre for Music and the Arts venue, now called The Piano.
AtlasVoices, was formed last year by tenor Ravil Atlas. The group of 35 singers is a collection of Christchurch’s best vocal talent dedicated to presenting exciting choral music. Many of the members are former Burnside High School students, sing in the New Zealand Opera chorus or have worked as professional classical musicians.
Johannes Brahms laboured over this requiem between 1865 and 1868. The end result is amazing, beautiful and theatrical. A profound piece of music, Brahms’ creation was a new type of requiem, one which delivered a message of hope, peace and humanity, instead of death, destruction and judgement.
Traditionally a large-scale work for chorus, orchestra, a soprano and a baritone soloist, AtlasVoices will perform with a smaller chamber orchestra. Soloists include local soprano Amanda Atlas and Bay of Plenty based Baritone Chalium Poppy.
The Brahms’ Requiem is sung in German and the performance is just over an hour at the Piano, Centre for Music and the Arts, 156 Armagh Street, Christchurch. Tickets are $32 and can be purchased at www.courttheatre.org or by phoning 03 963 0870. Door sales $40.
