Venice Architecture Biennale 2016: Breakfast at the Soane

New Zealand designer Helen M. Strevens announces exhibition for Venice Architecture Biennale 2016: Breakfast at the Soane
Having not long returned from showing her collection at the Maison + Objet Fair in Paris and the Ambiente Fair in Frankfurt earlier this year, New Zealand designer Helen M. Strevens is pleased to announce she will be exhibiting a selection of her fine bone china work, including a recent commission from the renowned Sir John Soane’s Museum as part of the Venice Architecture Biennale next month.
Entitled Breakfast at the Soane, the new work was commissioned to help mark the beloved museum’s recent restoration. Inspired by the Breakfast Room, and several key themes from throughout Soane’s house, Helen designed a fine bone china breakfast dining set. Each piece is a variation on a theme, beginning with the plate, the design of which is a reflection and simplification of the distinctive Breakfast Room ceiling.
For Helen, it was a delight to conceive a work inspired by one of her favourite museums – a place she’d studied and written papers about during her architectural studies at university, and felt particularly appropriate given Soane’s lifelong goal to educate, inspire, and share his work with other architects.
Breakfast at Soane’s is a bold evolution of Helen’s china based art, which includes the Iris and Roman Graffiti plates, and incorporates her light touch of 21st century design, while also paying homage to Soane’s unique and stimulating aesthetic.
The exhibition will be held in the New Zealand Room at Palazzo Bollani, Castello, Venice, and there will be an opening reception on Thursday September 22 from 4 to 6pm, with the exhibition running until Sunday September 25.
