RUSSIAN RESURRECTION FILM FESTIVAL 2016 ANNOUNCES FIRST FILMS – A THRILLING JOURNEY THROUGH ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST EXHILARATING FILM CULTURES
The 16th annual Russian Resurrection Film Festival – to be held in Auckland from October 25th – 30th – has announced the first films to screen.
From contemporary comedies and psychological thrillers to love stories set in the picturesque mountains of Armenia and against the backdrop of the Tsar’s last days, the Russian Resurrection Film Festival will take audiences on a thrilling journey through one of the world’s most diverse and exhilarating film cultures.
Opening the festival will be FLIGHT CREW, starring two of the biggest names in Russia today Danila Kozlovsky and Vladimir Mashkov. A remake of the 1979 Russian blockbuster disaster movie, FLIGHT CREW is the number one film at the 2016 Russian Box Office to date, and sits inside the top six for all-time money-earners in Russia.
MOSCOW NEVER SLEEPS, by Russian-speaking Irish filmmaker Johnny O’Reilly, and THE STUDENT, directed by Kirill Serebrennikov and described as ‘splendid’ by industry bible Variety, both screened at the Cannes International Film Festival earlier this year. The Robert Altman-esque MOSCOW NEVER SLEEPS feature a superb ensemble cast including Aleksey Serebryakov, Yuri Stoyanov, Mikhail Efremov and Evgenia Brik.
HERITAGE OF LOVE, directed by Yuriy Vasilev, was the number 1 film at the box office on release in Russia and will be released theatrically in the UK later this year.
The high profile psychological drama GREEN CARRIAGE, directed by Oleg Asadulin, will also feature in the festival, along with the hit comedies VERY BEST DAY (director Zhora Krizhovnikov) and the multi-narrative NO BORDERS (directorsRezo Gigineishvili, Roman Prygunov & Karen Oganesyan).
Other well known actors in the Festival include the icons of Russian cinema Inna Churikova (VERY BEST DAY and NO BORDERS) and Oleg Basilashvili (NO BORDERS), up and comer Victoria Isakova who plays the lead role in THE STUDENT and a supporting role in THE GREEN CARRIAGE, and Andrei Merzlikin, known to Russian Resurrection Film Festival audiences from last year’s TEACHA.
