98th National Commemoration of Armistice Day

Tomorrow’s National Commemoration of Armistice Day in the Hall of Memories, Pukeahu National War Memorial Park marking the end of the First World War is a significant one for us all and the public is welcome to attend, Paul James, CE Manatū Taonga, Ministry for Culture and Heritage said.

“This, the 98th, commemoration is held on 11 November every year to signal the end the First World War a conflict which saw more than 18,000 New Zealanders die and a further 40,000 wounded,” Paul James said.

“After four years of conflict the Armistice was signed in 1918 between the Allies and the German forces and on the 11th hour of the 11th day in the 11th month the guns fell silent.
“Throughout New Zealand bells were rung and parades were held to signal the end of the war to end all wars.

“Tomorrow’s commemoration includes wreath laying by the Governor-General, Her Excellency The Rt Hon Dame Patsy Reddy, Helen Smith, Deputy British High Commissioner and the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps Her Excellency O’love Jacobsen.

“A group of Australian school students from Ashurst School, Victoria, will be attending and together with the Australian High Commissioner His Excellency Peter Woolcott will lay a wreath and floral tributes at the Australian War Memorial,” Paul James said.
