MEDIA RELEASE – 15 December 2016
Inaugural Tahuna Beach Sculpture Walk Competition opens on Christmas Eve
The Best Sculpture Award in the inaugural Tahuna Beach Sculpture Walk Competition will be announced at special event for sponsors and media at 10.30am on Friday 23 December 2017 at the Deck Café & Store, Tahuna Beach Holiday Park, 70 Beach Road, Tahunanui. The winning artist will receive a $5,000 cash prize.
The Tahuna Beach Sculpture Walk Competition is a new outdoor sculpture exhibition, established in partnership between the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park and Arts Council Nelson in association with Rata Foundation and Creative Communities New Zealand. It is one of several activities planned to celebrate the fact that the park’s site has been available for holidaymakers and locals to enjoy since 1926 - a project called Collective Holiday Memories.
“Arts Council Nelson recognised the potential of the event to support and enhance the artistic capacity of the region,” says Community Arts Manager Lloyd Harwood. “We wanted to give local and national artists a new sculpture space to exhibit and put Nelson back on the map as a destination to see sculpture in the outdoors.”
Please arrive by 10.30am to mingle and enjoy coffee and nibbles on the deck. Following the award announcements, you will be transported to the western precinct of the park where you will be given a sneak preview of the sculptures and a chance to meet some of the artists.
The Tahuna Beach Sculpture Walk will be open to the public every day from 10am to 10pm from Christmas Eve until 10 January 2017. Entry is free but visitors must collect a wrist band from reception before entering the park. Both locals and holidaymakers will be invited to vote for their favourite sculpture and go into the draw for a $50 Deck Café & Store voucher. The winner of the People’s Choice Sculpture will be announced at the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park’s Big Birthday Bash on Friday 6 January 2017.
