December 20, With 2016 coming to a close, the World Photography Organisation looks back at the year and presents some of its favorite images from the Professional categories of 2016 Sony World Photography Awards, the world's largest photography competition.

It has also chosen a new selection of previously unreleased images to mark just three weeks left to enter the ten professional categories of the 2017 Sony World Photography Awards.

The 2016 Photographer of the Year title was awarded to Asghar Khamseh, for his series 'Fire of Hatred'. For more details about all 2016 winners, click here

Deadlines

The Professional competition closes for entries January 10, 2017.

To enter, photographers must enter a body of work between 5 and 10 images to any of the awards’ 10 Professional categories. See all category descriptions here

The deadline for photographers entering the Open and Youth competitions is January 5, 2017. Both are judged on a single image.

Winners' announcements and prizes

The awards' winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on April 20, 2017. Prizes include the latest Sony digital imaging equipment, inclusion in the 2017 awards’ book plus cash prizes of $25,000 (USD) for the overall Professional winner and $5,000 (USD) for the overall Open winner.

All winning and shortlisted images will also be exhibited as part of the 2017 Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition at Somerset House, London from April 21 – May 7, 2017. The exhibition will also feature a special curation of work by the awards’ 2017 Outstanding Contribution to Photography recipient.

The new shortlisted images from the 2017 Sony World Photography Awards will be released onFebruary 28, 2017.
