Students ‘Have a go’ at Sport Wellington’s Stadium Sports Festival

Primary school students from around the Greater Wellington region got a taste of 18 different sports at last Thursday’s Sport Wellington Stadium Sports Festival. Held at Westpac Stadium, over 580 children from 20 different local primary schools tried their hand at a variety of sports they might not usually get the chance to play.

A diverse range of sports were represented at the event including developing sports such as ultimate frisbee, floorball, and korfball, along with more well-known codes including football, rugby and netball.

Now in its 14th year, the event organised by Sport Wellington has provided over 7500 children from more than 150 primary schools with the opportunity to get involved with sports they may not have tried or even heard of.

Island Bay School’s Alice Doyle said “As a teacher I was thrilled to be part of the day. It was so well organised with enthusiastic volunteers. It would be amazing to have a week of this so more students could take part.”

The event also gives students the opportunity to experience new sports while also allowing the sports providers to interact and develop relationships with local schools.

Island Bay School student, Edan, enjoyed having a go at a new sport. “My favourite sport was badminton because l like doing new things and l have never done it before”.

“The Festival provides quality ‘have-a-go’ experiences for the children, and with Sport Wellington’s vision that ‘everyone in the greater Wellington region has a life-long involvement in sport and recreation’, the Festival is an example of how we’re working towards this” says organiser Andy Morris, Community Sport Advisor for Sport Wellington.

“We hope to inspire these students and that they’ll then continue participating in a sport they love within their local community clubs, hopefully into adulthood. We want to set our kids up for life so this is just the beginning” adds Morris.
