STROMA Ensemble meet Masters of Taonga Puoro in Concert
The renaissance of taonga puoro — traditional Māori musical instruments — continues to build, with a major collaboration between leading chamber ensemble STROMA andtwo of Aotearoa’s top performers of taonga puoro, Ariana Tikao, and Alistair Fraser at Hannah Playhouse this month.
On 28 June, Ariana and Alistair will come together with the players of Stroma to perform number of compositions that fuse Māori and Western musical worlds forTātai Whetū (“the constellations”).
Conducted by Hamish McKeich, the one-off concert will be centred around a major work co-written by Ariana Tikao and Wellington-based composer Philip Brownlee. Ko te Tātai Whetū explores, in musical form, the stories behind the constellations, and will feature Ariana singing and performing on her instruments, including the beautiful patu pounamu — a pounamu ‘gong’.
Also in the programme are works by New Zealand composers Dylan Lardelli, Tristan Carter and Gillian Whitehead, as well as two new waiata with ensemble backing by Ariana Tikao, one of which features words by the great Hirini Melbourne.
