Over 70 outfits have been received for next month’s Oversew Fashion Awards, including six from international entrants.

Robyn Cherry-Campbell, who organises the popular upcycled fashion awards being held at the Carterton Events Centre on July 22nd and 23rd, said entries closed on Friday with a total of 70 outfits received. Of that six were from Australia, one from France and 40 from around New Zealand, including entries from nine schools and three tertiary institutions (an increase of six from 2016). Also of that, 18 were from previous entrants.

“We’ve spent the weekend processing all our incredible entries and are amazed at the creativity involved and the quality of the garment design and construction,” she says. “Our entrants have followed the brief so well of taking a pre-worn garment and transforming it into something new. One entry has used old cotton t-shirts, torn them into strips and then knitted these strips into a completely new contemporary garment – it’s very impressive.”

This year’s awards has the theme Time for Change and has four categories. These include: menswear; street / daywear; Haute Couture / high-end fashion and mini collections where entrants submit two to four outfits thereby creating their own ‘up cycled collection'.

Mrs Cherry-Campbell said the Earthcare Environmental sponsored awards are now in their fifth year and have become a ‘must-do’ competition for young designers. She said that in addition to the Overall winner and Category Prizes, there are two dedicated Awards for Young Designers and Tertiary Designers (all entries compete in the open section), and an Internship for the Space Between is up for grabs.

Presales for the Oversew fashion Awards open at 9am today with VISA cardholders first in. General ticket sales go on sale at 12noon on June 19th.
