ARTWEEK AUCKLAND 2017
ACROSS AUCKLAND 7 – 15 OCTOBER

An artistic explosion will engulf Auckland from October 7- 15 with Artweek Auckland; a 10-day festival showcasing and celebrating the visual arts and artists of New Zealand. Ten Auckland precincts (Central City, Newmarket, Ponsonby, Arch Hill, Parnell, K’ Road, Devonport, East, West and South) come alive with a vibrant and dynamic programme providing a unique chance to explore Auckland’s amazingly diverse art world, set in public to private spaces, pop ups, streets and everything in-between.

The Heart of the City in Auckland’s CBD is illuminated with over forty art events. In Changing Lanes, teams of artists transform three city lanes, implementing intriguing installations that add character and life to the cityscape. Late Night Art on Tuesday 10th is the biggest night out with galleries open into the evening, including the Auckland Art Gallery, and an assortment of activities and activations until 9pm in the central city. The ever-popular central walks return complete with peaks behind the scenes at the Auckland Art Gallery and corporate collections into exhibitions rarely seen.

Electric Night returns to K’ Road on Thursday 12th, with galleries along the road open late, ending the evening with an exclusive art party. Creative installations along the road can be explored in a guided walking or cycle tour; including LOOK where businesses host artists in their shop windows, along with galleries and artist collectives. The Langham Speaker Seriesprovides a free forum with special guests creating discourse on contemporary art in New Zealand.

The popular outdoor exhibit GLOW returns to Devonport, with teams of students from Unitec School of Architecture developing and implementing stunning light installations in Windsor Reserve. Devonport Village becomes even more vibrant with exhibitions, art films at The Vic, along with special offers on dining and much more.

Newmarket and Parnell celebrate their public artworks and fantastic galleries with walks, talks, interactive shows, and life drawing. A unique opportunity to work with writer Tessa Duder to hone writing skills as part of the Creative Writing Project is available at Railway Studios in Newmarket, with Handmade in Parnell offering the chance to learn techniques direct from skilled artisans and artists such as trying your hand at water colour. Experience the power of looking at art slowly with the chance to participate in the international Slow Art Day at the Auckland Museum.

Ponsonby hosts a diverse Artweek programme from Antoinette Ratcliffe’s taxidermy installations and photographs at Studio One Toi Tū to FHE Galleries Chris Charteris’ exploration of the needle. Objectspace in their new space on Rose Road, has the curated The Company of Potters, exhibition of leading New Zealand ceramists from 1974 and 1983 and Whitespacepresents Jack Trolove’s exhibition showcasing his tactile, almost sculptural use of paint and artist talk.

West Auckland delivers an amazing range of events for the whole family, with McCahon Househosting international resident Taro Shinoda from Japan whose conceptual and experimental artistic process traverses video, sculpture, installation, performance, painting and photography. Te Uru features a live musical screening from filmmaker Robert George and Christine Hellyar’s work inspired by the Waitakere Ranges. These along with more exhibitions, talks and open studios at Corban Estate Arts Centre and Kumeu Arts Centre make an exciting week for West Auckland.

Head East to experience the Colin McCahon: On the Road exhibition, exploring the relationship between faith and art, featuring selected contemporary artists inspired by faith or exploring aspects of faith in their work. Lisa Crowley’s The Incandescents blends video with text to examine the metaphor of illumination.

Visit South Auckland to discover all on offer for Artweek, including a look at The Pah Homestead home of the Wallace Art Award, along with panel discussions, exhibitions and workshops at Māngere Arts Centre, Franklin Arts Centre, Papakura Gallery, and Fresh Gallery Otara.

New to Artweek Auckland 2017 is a series of guided bus tours, by well-travelled art guide Glen Armstrong, taking tours South ARTsouth, West ARTwest and East ARTeast, to explore the art and art history of each region.

From free guided walks and cycle tours, to galleries and city lanes, Auckland will come alive with drama, light, transformations, graffiti, and art!
